Grossi praised the UN Secretaries General

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, who aspires to the post of UN Secretary General, compared the UN Secretaries General to conductors who perform Mozart in different ways.

“We have a common starting point — the Charter. But, you know, sometimes I like to use such a comparison, especially because our interview is taking place in Vienna. Vienna is a city of music. The same Mozart music can be performed by one conductor and another conductor, and it will sound very different. I like this comparison. Not necessarily in relation to the current Secretary General, but in general,” Grossi said, answering the question of how his vision differs from the approach of the current Secretary General and what approaches he uses at the IAEA, he could use at the UN.

He added that the same can be said about the Statute of the IAEA: having the same set of rules and parameters, you can be a very different director general or a very different Secretary General.

“I think it all depends on how you work, what level of trust you are able to inspire in your interlocutors. The UN is different from the IAEA. The UN has a very important center – the five permanent members of the Security Council, then the non-permanent members, then the General Assembly. And we need to interact with all these different platforms in different ways,” the head of the IAEA added.

According to Grossi, the Secretary General is a person who talks to everyone, a very active person.
