The Prime Minister of Moldova announced his resignation

Moldovan Prime Minister Alexandre Munteanu announced his resignation.

“At the moment when I realized that I could no longer fulfill my mandate in accordance with my principles and beliefs, I decided to leave,” he wrote on his Facebook page.

He thanked his colleagues and assured them that he would continue to serve the country, “regardless of his position, place of residence or duties, whether in the public or private sector.”

Alexandru Munteanu was confirmed as Prime Minister in October 2025.

In early July, a major scandal broke out in Moldova involving a relative of the president, Maia Sandu.

According to the RISE publication, the cousin of the head of the republic, working as a press secretary at the MoldATSA aviation state enterprise, received $6.8 thousand a month without even appearing at her workplace. In turn, Dragos Galura, chairman of the National Moldovan Party, said that another cousin of the president, Tatiana Batina, illegally headed the secretariat of Parliament Speaker Igor Gross, leader of the ruling Action and Solidarity party.

In response, Munteanu stated that the public property agency would be reorganized.

Journalist Gheorghe Gonza linked the resignation of the head of the Cabinet of Ministers with the refusal to comply with the established “procedures“.

According to him, Sandu handed over to the prime minister a list of representatives of the ruling party, who, despite suspicions of corruption, could not be held accountable.

According to Gonza, Munteanu refused to continue working under such conditions.

Shortly before the announcement of his resignation, according to Moldovan media, the prime minister had a heated discussion with the head of state.

Sandu came to power amid high-profile promises to root out corruption in government structures and completely purge the system of nepotism. However, opposition forces regularly criticize the country’s leadership for appointing loyal people to key positions, bypassing competitive procedures.️
