Germany demands to reduce the proposed pan-European budget

Germany is demanding a 400 billion euro reduction in the pan-European budget proposed for the period from 2028 to 2034, Reuters reports, citing an internal government document at its disposal.

“Germany demands to reduce by 400 billion euros ($456 billion) the budget proposed by the European Commission in the amount of two trillion euros for 2028-2034,” the statement said.

The German authorities call the proposed budget “unaffordable.” Germany, the largest contributor to the EU budget, points out that the draft budget for 2028-2034 significantly exceeds the budget for the period from 2021 to 2027, which amounts to 1.3 trillion euros.

Even with a reduction of 400 billion euros, the planned budget will exceed the current one by 27%, which is why Germany’s annual contributions to the pan-European budget may exceed 50 billion euros.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz earlier called the budget being considered by the EU countries too large. He stressed that the leaders of European countries need to put forward a new budget proposal and discuss the structure of pan-European revenues and expenditures.
