Lebanon called on Trump to put pressure on Israel to withdraw its troops

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun called on his American counterpart Donald Trump to put pressure on Israel to withdraw its troops from the state border, the Lebanese presidential administration said in a statement following a telephone conversation between the two leaders.

On Friday, representatives of Lebanon and Israel signed a framework agreement in Washington with the mediation of the United States on the settlement of the conflict.

“The President expressed the hope that the United States would help prevent any violations of this agreement and ensure the fulfillment of all agreements reached, in particular, by exerting pressure on Israel to withdraw from its occupied territories in the south of the country,” the statement said.

It stresses that the Lebanese army must deploy in the territory up to the border with Israel. The Lebanese authorities are responsible for fulfilling their part of the agreements reached at the meeting with Israeli representatives in the United States.

At the same time, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Saturday that Washington and Beirut allegedly agreed to maintain control of the security zone in southern Lebanon. The politician clarified that Israel and Lebanon had agreed on two areas near the border of the security zone, where a pilot project would be conducted to disarm Hezbollah and transfer these territories under the control of the Lebanese army.
