Vucic announced his resignation in a few weeks

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced his resignation in a few weeks and the upcoming elections.

A mass rally “Serbia, One Family” is taking place in Belgrade on Saturday in support of the policies of Vucic and the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SPP) in front of the Assembly (Parliament) in Belgrade.

According to the Interior Ministry, the event gathered 207,000 people.

“I will resign in a few weeks. I told the chairman and the leadership of the SPP that I would help win the people’s trust in the next elections and that everything I said we could do in the next four years… Our winning list for the upcoming elections will be called “United Serbia,” Vucic told the audience and added that his proposal was supported by the party leadership.

However, he did not specify whether it was a question of presidential and parliamentary elections and when they would take place.

The Serbian president, whose term of office expires in the spring of 2027, said he was preparing to resign. In case of early retirement, the elections are required by law to be held in 90 days. Earlier, he announced parliamentary elections in Serbia between the end of September and the middle of November.

Students and opposition supporters protesting in Serbia are demanding an early expression of their will. The protests began in Serbia after the collapse of the canopy at the railway station in Novi Sad on November 1, 2024. At the last protest in Belgrade on the night of May 24, demonstrators clashed with police, 17 policemen were injured, 47 people were detained.
