The US company wants to purchase a Nissan plant for the production of UAVs in Japan

The American defense company Anduril is negotiating to acquire a plant of the Japanese automaker Nissan in order to establish production of military drones in Japan, Reuters reports, citing sources familiar with the negotiations.

The article notes that the Oppama plant in question is a symbol of Japan’s industrial renaissance and one of the first large automobile plants built in the country after the end of World War II. The plant opened in 1961 and produced about 18 million cars. According to Reuters, Nissan had previously announced plans to close the plant in 2028.

“The American defense company Anduril Industries is negotiating the acquisition of a Nissan Motor assembly plant called Oppama, located near Tokyo, in order to establish production of military drones in Japan,” the report said.

According to the agency, Nissan declined to comment on the situation surrounding negotiations with Anduril. The company said that a decision on the future owner of the plant has not yet been made.
