A North Korean soldier defected to South Korea

A North Korean soldier was taken under control by the South Korean military on Tuesday after crossing the inter-Korean border, and he expressed his intention to defect to South Korea, the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said.

“On Tuesday evening, June 23, our military ensured the safety of one North Korean serviceman in the central sector of the front, and the relevant authorities are currently investigating the circumstances of the incident,” the OKNSH said in a statement to the media.

According to the Yonhap news agency, this is the fourth case of North Korean citizens moving to the South after President Lee Jae-myung’s administration came to power, and the second case involving a North Korean serviceman.

Last October, a North Korean soldier crossed the military demarcation line (MDL) in the central sector of the front and also announced his intention to defect to South Korea. In addition, in July last year, one resident of the DPRK crossed the border, and another was rescued in the neutral waters of the Hangang River.
