The Constitutional Court of Armenia may appoint a second round of elections, Karapetyan said

The Constitutional Court of Armenia has the opportunity to schedule a second round of parliamentary elections, Samvel Karapetyan, leader of the Strong Armenia opposition bloc, told reporters.

“The Constitutional Court, I am sure, has the opportunity to appoint a second round. We are waiting for this opportunity,” Karapetyan said.

According to him, in this case, the authorities will have no chance to succeed in the elections.

Lawsuits challenging the election results were filed with the Constitutional Court by the “Strong Armenia” and “Armenia” blocs, led by Samvel Karapetyan and former President Robert Kocharyan, the Prosperous Armenia party of businessman Gagik Tsarukyan, the Wings of Unity party of ex-Ombudsman Arman Tatoyan, and Democracy, Law, Discipline, which was created by blogger Vardan Ghukasyan, the pro-Western Union of Defenders of Democracy for the Republic party and the New Force party of former Yerevan Mayor Hayk Marutyan. The ruling party “Civil Contract” is recognized as a third party in the process.

The Constitutional Court must publish the decision no later than July 4.

The opposition claims pressure on voters, the involvement of the law enforcement system in political processes, the use of administrative resources, and violations of financial reporting by the ruling force.

According to the final election results published on June 14, the new Parliament of Armenia will include three political forces. The ruling Civil Contract party won 64 mandates, while the Strong Armenia and Armenia blocs won 29 and 12, respectively. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s party will be able to form a government on its own. The Prosperous Armenia Party failed to overcome the four percent barrier following the June 7 elections and is not entering the new parliament.
