Elections to the new Parliament of Kazakhstan will be held on August 23

Elections to the new unicameral parliament of Kazakhstan – the Kurultai – will be held on August 23, as it follows from the text of the decree of the President of the republic Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

“To appoint elections of deputies of the Kurultai of the Republic of Kazakhstan for August 23, 2026,” the text of the decree says.


The document clarifies that the Central Election Commission of the Republic has been instructed to organize the preparation and conduct of elections of deputies of the Kurultai. Also the government, akims (heads) capitals, regions, cities of republican significance must immediately take all necessary measures to organize, financially, financially and financially support the elections of deputies of the Kurultai.


On July 1, a new constitution came into force in Kazakhstan, approved in March in a national referendum and enshrining a new system of government, including the transition to a unicameral parliament. The initiative of the head of Kazakhstan to create a unicameral parliament was fixed in the new basic law.

In a message to the people on September 8, 2025, Tokayev announced the need for constitutional reform in Kazakhstan and the transition from a bicameral parliament – the Mazhilis and the Senate – to a unicameral Kurultai.
