Pistorius told how much Berlin spends on American weapons

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius told how much money Berlin spends on the purchase of American weapons.

“About 20% of the special fund for the Bundeswehr created in 2022 is intended for arms purchases in the United States. This is about 20 billion euros. We have ordered, for example, fighter jets, heavy transport helicopters and Patriot air defense systems. To this are added several other orders from the regular military budget,” Pistorius said in an interview with Spiegel.

The minister stressed that Germany also buys German and European weapons, but cannot do without American ones.

“In the future, we will also buy in the USA. But the main focus will be on Europe. After all, the Americans also understand that the money of German and European taxpayers should be spent on our production facilities,” he added.

Earlier, the Financial Times newspaper, citing sources, reported that Berlin was insisting that the United States allow more American weapons to be produced in Germany in order to make up for the problems in Europe’s military potential. According to the newspaper, German officials are asking the Americans to agree on a joint production agreement before the NATO summit to be held in Ankara.
