A suspect in the murder of politician Widdecombe has been arrested in Britain

British police have announced that they have arrested a suspect in the murder of right-wing politician Anne Widdecombe.

Earlier, police in Devon and Cornwall counties announced that they had released a 25-year-old white man who had previously been arrested on suspicion of Widdecombe’s murder.

“We confirm that a 28-year-old man has been arrested at an address in South Yorkshire… on suspicion of the murder of Anne Widdecombe,” Devon and Cornwall Police said in a statement on their website.

The detainee turned out to be a white British citizen.

The police stressed that they still do not see any signs of terrorism in connection with this murder and continue to investigate.

Widdecombe has been a spokeswoman for the right-wing Reform UK party on migration issues since 2023. Prior to that, she was the Member of Parliament for Maidstone in Kent for 23 years. From 1994 to 1997, Widdecombe was Deputy Minister of Home Affairs and Employment in the government of Prime Minister John Major.

After leaving parliament, she began her television career, taking part in the dance show Strictly Come Dancing in 2010 and in the reality show Celebrity Big Brother in 2018.

Widdecombe held socially conservative views, opposing the legalization of abortion, euthanasia and the LGBT movement, and also supported the introduction of the death penalty. In 2019, she opposed Prime Minister David Cameron’s decision to legalize same-sex marriage, which caused a flurry of criticism from the left.
