French President Emmanuel Macron, delivering his annual address to the country’s armed forces, took off his sunglasses for the first time in two weeks at a public event, although he arrived in them.
⠀
The broadcast of the address shows how the leader of the republic arrived at the Ministry of Defense in his trademark aviator sunglasses. It was only when Macron approached the podium that he hugged them before beginning his last traditional address to the army on the eve of the national holiday on July 14.

After the speech, the president put them on again.
On June 29, Macron appeared in public wearing sunglasses during a reception at the Elysee Palace of Sultan Haysam bin Tariq of Oman. Since then, he has appeared in them at public events and meetings with leaders of countries. According to French media, the president started wearing glasses due to eye problems.

Before that, the French leader had already appeared in sunglasses at the World Economic Forum in Davos in January 2026. The French leader also made his speech in sunglasses, despite the fact that he was indoors, explaining that a vessel had burst in his eye.
