Trump congratulated Spain on winning the World Cup

US President Donald Trump said he congratulated Spain on its excellent team.

“I talked to Spain and congratulated them on their great team,” Trump told reporters.

The American leader said that he has no tension in relations with Spain or with anyone else.

On Sunday, the Spanish national team beat the Argentine team in the World Cup final with a score of 1:0 (in extra time). Ferran Torres came on as a substitute in the 62nd minute, and scored the only goal of the game in the 106th. He became the second player to come on as a substitute during the final match and scored the winning goal, after German Mario Gotze (2014).

The World Cup was held for the first time with the participation of 48 national teams in three countries – the USA, Canada and Mexico.

In recent months, disagreements have persisted between Madrid and Washington over defense spending. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has repeatedly rejected the need to increase them to 5% of GDP, while Trump has criticized Spain’s position.
