Millions of British homes could be cut off from electricity due to conflict in Ukraine

Several million homes in the UK are at risk of blackouts due to the conflict in Ukraine.

British ministers have warned that six million homes could face electricity rationing this winter if the standoff with Russia escalates. Contingency measures may mean power outages on weekdays from 7:00 to 10:00 and from 16:00 to 21:00.

In the event of a cessation of Russian gas supplies to the European Union, it may be necessary to impose restrictions on the industrial use of gas, including at gas-fired power plants. The threat prompted Business Minister Kwasi Kwarteng to ask Britain’s coal-fired power plants to delay their planned shutdown.

Earlier, the head of the British energy regulator Ofgem, Jonathan Brearley, called rising gas and electricity bills a “life or death issue” for a number of residents of the United Kingdom. The official noted that further price increases are expected this year due to extreme market volatility.
