Prime Minister of Sweden gave Zelensky a copy of the letter of Charles XII on the independence of the Zaporizhzhya Sich

Prime Minister of Sweden Magdalena Andersson handed over to Ukraine a copy of the letter of King Charles XII recognizing the independence of the Zaporizhian Sich.

“In a letter, he [the king] instructs the Swedish ambassador to recognize the Zaporizhzhya Sich as an independent state, a subject of international law, so that there is no oppression from the Muscovite tsar. I think it fits very well into the current political context. Already at the beginning of the 18th century, our king was impressed by the Cossacks and Cossack democracy,” the Prime Minister of Sweden said.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, in turn, read a fragment of the document, agreeing with its relevance today.

The document dates from 1711 (during the Northern War) and was addressed to the ambassador in Constantinople. The original is now kept in the State Archives of Sweden. Two years before that, Hetman of Ukraine Ivan Mazepa, Karl XII and Kosh ataman of the Zaporizhzhya Grassroots Army Kost Gordienko signed an alliance treaty, after which they lost the Battle of Poltava to the Russian army.
