Secretary General Stoltenberg: Participants of the NATO summit in Madrid will reconsider their position on Russia and China

At the upcoming summit in Madrid at the end of June, the leaders of the NATO member countries decided to reconsider the bloc’s position on Russia and China. Jens Stoltenberg, Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance, stated this in an interview with the Spanish newspaper ABC.

“The current strategic concept refers to Russia as a strategic partner and does not mention China. Now, of course, we will discuss the aggressive actions of the Russian Federation, as well as the impact of the rise of China on our security. The Madrid summit will be one of our most important summits,” the head of NATO said, stressing that the concept “will reflect the new reality of security.”

Stoltenberg also drew attention to the fact that the meeting will discuss issues related to threats emanating from the south, such as instability and terrorism.

“Stability in Africa should matter to the entire alliance. We will make decisions to take a step forward, including in terms of the sphere of influence on the sea,” he said.

The secretary general said that it is impossible to know exactly how long the conflict in Ukraine will last. Stoltenberg urged to be prepared for a long war.

“There are many types of support for Ukrainian forces. We have to be very careful when talking about specific weapons systems,” he concluded.
