The leader of the Italian party “League” called EU sanctions against Russia ineffective

Matteo Salvini, leader of the Italian centre-right League party, believes that EU sanctions against Russia because of the situation around Ukraine are ineffective.

“I said that they are, we approved them,” said the politician. “But who pays for them? Also Italian workers.” “So I’m asking the EU to protect them as well,” he explained. “Do you want to continue with sanctions that are ineffective? I don’t think they stopped the war.” “We have always approved of aid to Ukraine, as well as sanctions,” Salvini added. “But the workers cannot pay for them.”

He also stated that the Italian intelligence services denied “any involvement of Italian parties in Russian financing.” “There are no economic relations,” the League leader clarified. “And let me insist that those responsible for national security deny Russian interference in Italian democracy.”
