The Niger authorities terminated the military agreement with the United States.

The Niger military in power has terminated an agreement with the United States that allows American troops to remain on the territory of this African country, Amadou Abdraman, spokesman for Niger’s military transitional government said.

The decision to terminate the agreement takes effect immediately.

The decision followed a visit by US officials, including US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Molly Fee and the head of the Pentagon’s Africa Command, Michael Langley. An official spokesman for Niger’s military transitional government said in a speech that the American delegation violated diplomatic protocol and Niger authorities were not informed of the composition of the delegation, the date of its arrival or the agenda.

As of 2023, there were about 1.1 thousand American troops and an American UAV base in Niger.
