The State Department has launched an office of the latest technologies.

The US State Department announced the launch of a structural unit that will oversee the development of foreign policy and diplomacy regarding critical and emerging technologies.

“The Office of the Special Representative for Critical and Emerging Technologies begins its work at the State Department today,” the press release said.

The office is intended to become a center for coordinating foreign policy in this area and will interact with foreign partners on the topic of “technologies that transform societies, economies and security.” Among them are biotechnology, artificial intelligence, quantum information and advanced computer technologies.

The establishment of the office will be handled by Dr. Seth Senter, who has been appointed to the post of deputy to the as-yet-unappointed special envoy, the State Department added.

“Secretary of State (Anthony) Blinken created the office as part of a broad modernization agenda as critical and emerging world-changing technologies are now an integral part of American foreign policy and diplomacy,” the press release said.
