Theresa May to arrive at the G20 summit in Argentina early on Friday, the British prime minister intends to press Mohammed bin Salman over Jamal Khashoggi’s murder and Yemen’s famine.
Saudi crown prince who is mired in controversy over the death of the journalist Khashoggi in October will get a definitely cold welcome from Theresa May. According to the senior government official, Cabinet has been engaging with the Saudi government in recent weeks in the wake of the murder of Mr Khashoggi. The UK says there needs to be a clear, credible and understandable explanation given of exactly what happened last month.
The British PM is going to use the recent G20 summit for the resolving current and old issues. For the UK’s PM, the two-day summit is a great opportunity to bolster trade with Latin America, moreover, it is the first ever UK trade envoy’s visit to Argentina since the Falklands conflict in the 1980s. In Argentina’s capital, Theresa May also faces the tricky prospect of the disputed Falkland Islands being raised in bilateral talks with Mauricio Macri, the president of Argentina.
Being a diplomat, the prime minister said: “The announcement of a new trade envoy for Argentina and progress in transitioning our trade agreement with Chile show that we are already taking significant steps to boost trade in fast-growing new markets.”
Another important issue on Ms May’s agenda is the Yemen situation. Her Cabinet has been doing so in order to deliver a message that the UK wants full accountability and full transparency in this regards. During the summit, PM will repeat that message in relation to Yemen, which has complicated relations with Saudi Arabia led by the Saudi crown prince.
