Britain’s electricity debt hits record £1.3bn

Usually gas prices in the UK fall in the summer, as do utility bills, and consumers gradually pay off their accumulated debts to electricity suppliers. However, this is not happening this year.

British household debt to electricity suppliers hit a record £1.3bn.

According to price comparison service Uswitch.com, household electricity debt as of July is already more than double its September level.

Since 2018, when electricity prices were regulated in the UK, household debt to suppliers has been declining in the summer, but this year consumer debt to suppliers has increased by 10% from April to July.

This trend suggests that in winter, when the demand for gas will be higher, the population’s debt to suppliers will increase.
