As the European Union (EU) enlarges, the differences between member states in terms of political interests, economic influence and welfare systems will grow, so the association should give up its veto power in a number of areas. This proposal was made by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in his speech entitled “Europe is our future”.

“Where unanimity is required today, the risk of an individual country exercising its veto power and preventing everyone else from moving forward increases with each new member state,” the politician said.

Scholz proposed a gradual transition to a majority vote system. In his opinion, it should be applied in the field of common foreign policy and tax policy. The chancellor noted that he is also aware of the future consequences for Germany in the event of changes.

Earlier, Poland threatened to veto all EU initiatives, sue Brussels and create a coalition to remove the current head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, along with her panel of European commissioners, if they refuse to allocate funds to fight the pandemic.

As Krzysztof Sobolewski, general secretary of the country’s ruling Law and Justice party, said, if the EU leadership “tries to pin us against the wall, we will have no choice but to take all the weapons from our arsenal” and respond with tit-for-tat tactics.
