More than 2,000 aftershocks have been recorded in southeast Turkey.

More than 2,000 aftershocks have occurred and continue to occur in southeastern Turkey following a devastating earthquake that killed more than 20,000 people, said Orhan Tatar, director general of the Emergency Management Risk Mitigation Unit (AFAD).

“To date, more than 2,000 aftershocks have occurred and continue to occur. The vast majority of them were above magnitude 4,” Tatar said at a briefing on Saturday.

An earthquake of magnitude 7.7 struck southeastern Turkey on Monday morning. It, according to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has become the strongest since 1939. On the afternoon of the same day, another earthquake of magnitude 7.6 struck. The tremors, followed by hundreds of aftershocks, were felt in 10 provinces of the country and neighboring states, including Syria.
