It was proposed to change the Soviet names of the regions to historical ones in Kazakhstan.

The head of the Ulytau region of Kazakhstan, Berik Abdygaliuly, proposed to rename a number of regions in the country that received names in Soviet times.

The Ulytau region is one of three regions created in Kazakhstan since June 8, 2022 on behalf of the head of state Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. In this sacred region for the Kazakhs, in the past, important people’s meetings were held, and the khan’s headquarters were also located there.

Abdygaliuly made such a proposal at the republican scientific and practical conference in the city of Zhezkazgan.

“When the region was created, there were proposals to call it the Central Kazakhstan region. However, the head of state, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, made a fair and historic decision to call it the Ulytau region. Not only Ulytau, but also the Zhetysu and Abai regions were named after the Kazakh sacred lands and great personality. This is also a good and inspiring event. We definitely need to continue this trend, because since the Soviet period there was a tradition of giving administrative names to the regions. Unfortunately, there are still such regions,” he said.

In his opinion, they should be named after sacred lands with a thousand-year history.

“For example, if we rename the West Kazakhstan region to the Akzhayik region, the East Kazakhstan region to the Altai region, the North Kazakhstan region to the Kyzylzhar region, and the Pavlodar region to the Bayanauyl region, this <…> will inspire everyone,” the head of the region believes.
