Erdogan approved the parliament’s decision to ratify Finland’s application to NATO.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan approved the decision of the country’s parliament to ratify Finland’s application to join NATO.

Erdogan’s decree was published in the official gazette Resmi Gazete.

“It was decided to consider it expedient to approve the protocol of July 5, 2022 on Finland’s accession to the North Atlantic Treaty,” the text of the decree says.

On the night of March 31, the ratification of the Finnish application to NATO by all members of the alliance was completed, it is expected that in the coming days the country will become a full member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

Finland and Sweden, against the background of the events in Ukraine in May last year, submitted applications to the NATO Secretary General to join the alliance. By the beginning of 2023, 28 out of 30 NATO countries approved both applications. However, Hungary and Turkey wished to consider the Swedish application separately from the Finnish one.
