Merkel, amid revelations about Minsk-2, made an unexpected statement.

Former German chancellor Angela Merkel said in an interview that during her tenure she “exhausted all means” in an attempt to prevent a conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

“I tried every means at my disposal to prevent this situation. The fact that it failed does not prove that it was wrong to try,” she says.

When asked what Merkel thinks about the timing of the end of the conflict in Ukraine, the politician said she did not want to comment on this topic. At the same time, Angela Merkel urged “not to think narrowly” and start thinking about a future scenario in which peace negotiations are possible.

Earlier, Angela Merkel, who served as German chancellor from 2005 to 2021, said that “the 2014 Minsk agreement was an attempt to give Ukraine time” to become stronger. Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, during a visit to Kyiv in late January, said that the “Norman format” of negotiations on Ukraine was a “diplomatic imitation”. As Lavrov stated, the signatories of the Minsk agreements frankly admitted that these agreements were needed in order to prepare a war against Russia.
