The US Treasury predicted the inability to service the public debt in a month.

The US Treasury Department may be unable to fully service the national debt as early as June 1 unless Congress expands borrowing limits, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned in a letter to lawmakers.

“Having assessed recent federal tax revenues, our best estimate is that we will not be able to continue meeting all government commitments by early June, possibly as early as June 1, unless Congress raises or suspends the debt limit by then,” she wrote.

The White House is demanding that Congress raise the national debt ceiling unconditionally. The House of Representatives, controlled by the Republican opposition, links the move to the approval of a budget cut program.
