An American E-6B Mercury aircraft capable of performing the functions of a strategic air command post arrived in Iceland during operations in the area of ​​​​responsibility of the US European Command, the military said.

The tasks assigned to the aircraft, which can also be used as a repeater of communication signals in the interests of the submarine fleet, were not reported in the European command.

“A US Navy E-6B Mercury, assigned to the First Wing of the Strategic Command, recently arrived in Iceland while conducting operations in the area of ​​responsibility of the European Command,” the press release says.


The crew met with the US ambassador to Iceland, “other diplomatic and military leaders.”

The website of the US Navy’s specialized division says that aircraft of this type can be used to communicate with “naval missile forces in times of crisis and serve as an air command post, including orders to launch ground-based intercontinental ballistic missiles.
