Assange appeals extradition decision to US

Julian Assange has filed an appeal against the decision to extradite him to the United States.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has appealed his extradition from the United Kingdom, setting off a months-long legal battle over whether he should be sent to the US to face espionage charges.

The journalist had until Friday to file an appeal. Assange filed two appeals with a British court on Thursday, according to a lawyer from the law firm Birnberg Peirce & Partners representing him. Now the court must decide whether his appeal can be heard.

Earlier, WikiLeaks reported that British Home Secretary Priti Patel approved Assange’s extradition to the United States, where he faces 175 years in prison. The organization called the decision a “dark day” for the freedom of speech issue. The decision can be challenged within two weeks.
