Protocol on the accession of Sweden and Finland to NATO will be signed on July 5

The protocol on the accession of Sweden and Finland to NATO will be signed on Tuesday, July 5, with the participation of the foreign ministers of these countries, Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said following the alliance’s summit in Madrid.

“Yesterday at the summit, the main political decision was made to invite Sweden and Finland. The formal signing of the accession protocol will take place on Tuesday in the presence of the Finnish and Swedish foreign ministers,” NATO Secretary General said.

The signing of the accession protocol is one of the stages in the process of accession of new members to NATO. It implies a protocol on the accession of “newbies” to the North Atlantic Treaty and is, in fact, an addition to the treaty. The protocol after signing and ratification becomes an integral part of the agreement and allows the invited country to become a member of the alliance.
