Former Chinese leader Jiang Zemin has died.

Former leader of the People’s Republic of China Jiang Zemin has died at the age of 96, China Central Television reported.

“Our highly respected comrade Jiang Zemin suffered from leukemia complicated by multiple organ failure, it was impossible to save him, on November 30, 2022, at 12:13, he died in Shanghai at the age of 96,” the message says.


The death of the former Chinese leader was jointly released by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CCP), the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, the State Council of the People’s Republic of China, the National Committee of the People’s Political Consultative Council of China, the Military Council of the CPC Central Committee, and the Central Military Council of the People’s Republic of China.

“Comrade Jiang Zemin is recognized by our party, our army and the people of all nationalities as an outstanding leader with high authority, a statesman, a military strategist, a diplomat,” the obituary says.

Jiang Zemin was born on August 17, 1926 in the city of Yangzhou in the eastern province of Jiangsu. He joined the Chinese Communist Party in 1946 and graduated from the electrical engineering department of Jiaotong University a year later. In 1955, Jiang Zemin did an internship at the I.V. Stalin in Moscow.

The politician was General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee from 1989 to 2002 and served as Chairman of China from 1993 to 2003, then he was replaced by Hu Jintao.
