President of Moldova: integration into the CIS does not contribute to development.

The Eurasian vector and integration in the CIS does not bring proper development to Moldova, the country must follow a single European course, Moldovan President Maia Sandu said on Friday in parliament.

Last March, Sandu signed an application for the republic’s accession to the European Union, noting that the process of European integration must be accelerated. The heads of state and government of the European Union at the summit in Brussels on June 23 approved granting Ukraine and Moldova the status of candidates for joining the union. In October, Moldova hosted the first meeting of the European Integration Commission, which discussed the need for reforms in various areas and called for the creation of 35 working groups to remake local legislation to European standards.

“I call on all political forces to support Moldova’s accession to the EU and do it unconditionally. We have seen all these years that the Eurasian vector, integration into the CIS does not bring the proper result and development to the country. The EU is our only way. All other options are lies,” Sandu said in a speech in parliament.

Parliamentarians of the ruling Action and Solidarity party were present in the hall, the opposition boycotted the meeting of the legislative assembly.

Most residents of Moldova are in favor of maintaining economic, political and cultural ties with the Russian Federation, according to a poll published on Monday by the Institute of Marketing and Sociological Surveys (IMAS) of the republic. The survey also showed that more than half of Moldovans oppose the country’s withdrawal from the CIS, and that many citizens are dissatisfied with the standard of living and believe that the country’s leadership is guilty of raising the price of gas and electricity.
