Washington is promoting the theory of a “nuclear threat” from China, looking for an excuse to expand its nuclear arsenal, the main source of the “nuclear threat” in the world is the United States, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said at a briefing on Friday.

Earlier, Assistant to the President of the United States for Homeland Security Affairs Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall said that the United States needs to maintain contacts with China in order to minimize nuclear threats against the backdrop of growing nuclear arsenals in their Asian competitor.

“The United States has again and again hyped the theory of a nuclear threat from China, looking for an excuse to expand its nuclear arsenal and maintain its military hegemony,” the diplomat said, commenting on the words of Sherwood-Randall.

Mao Ning stressed that China has always taken a prudent and responsible position in its nuclear policy, firmly adhered to a defensive nuclear strategy, a policy of no first use of nuclear weapons, and always kept its nuclear forces at the lowest level necessary to ensure national security.

The diplomat noted that in recent years the United States has aggressively modernized its “nuclear triad”, constantly strengthening the role of nuclear weapons in its national security policy.

“The United States is the world’s largest source of nuclear threat,” Mao Ning added, urging the United States to carefully consider its nuclear policy, reduce the role of nuclear weapons in its national security policy, and take practical actions to reduce nuclear risks and maintain global and regional peace and security.
