The National Anti-Corruption Center and the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office are conducting searches at the employees of the Chisinau City Hall in the case of embezzlement of funds received from abroad for refugees from Ukraine, the head of the press service of the NAC, Angela Starinski said.

“Employees of the National Anti-Corruption Center (NCAC) and the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office are conducting searches in the case of the theft of foreign funds intended for refugees. We are located at several addresses in the capital, including officials from the General Directorate of Medical and Social Assistance in Chisinau,” Starinski said.

The mayor of Chisinau, Ion Ceban, believes that this is an attempt to “denigrate” him personally and his team, he is sure that “deliberate desperate actions of the Action and Solidarity” party are behind the searches.

“People in masks came today to the head of the Health Department Boris Gylca and other employees, because today the Chisinau City Hall is organizing the largest social forum, and the authorities do not like it, because many guests come from abroad. About 100 speakers and guests out of 30 countries… They didn’t manage to get to my family, so they took on my colleagues,” Cheban wrote on his Telegram channel.

Earlier, the mayor of Chisinau reported that he and his relatives could be raided with searches, as the mayor of the capital criticized the authorities and the ruling Action and Solidarity party. The mayor of Chisinau has repeatedly accused the central authorities of blocking the work of the city administration. He urged the ruling party to report on the spending of grants and loans received from abroad recently.

Local elections will be held in Moldova this fall. Ceban will run for a second term, according to opinion polls, he is one of the most likely candidates for mayor of Chisinau.
