The United States has imposed the most extensive sanctions against China since the 1990s.

Announcing another list of restrictions on the supply of goods and technology to China, the Joe Biden administration has imposed the most extensive sanctions against Beijing since the nineties of the XX century.

On October 7, it became known that the United States limited the sale to China of super-powerful chips for computing related to artificial intelligence, equipment for their production, and a number of other semiconductor technologies. The sanctions imposed by the US Department of Commerce relate primarily to graphics cards that are used in supercomputers and, in particular, to accelerate artificial intelligence programs.

Manufacturers of restricted technologies will now have to obtain a special export license to work with Chinese companies, with US authorities immediately warning that most applications for such licenses will be rejected.

In addition, the sanctions prevent manufacturers from exporting AI chips if they are made on US hardware or using US-developed software. The sale to China of equipment for the production of such chips is also prohibited.

The ban applies to the products of all US-registered companies, wherever located, as well as all chips in the world produced using American technology or equipment. It is also forbidden to help China develop new semiconductor technologies.

With reference to experts, the Air Force notes that the United States has not imposed such large-scale restrictions on China since the 1990s.
