Mexico: President declares national mourning after earthquake

Mexico: President declares national mourning after earthquake

Mexico is trying to back to the normal life after the earthquake, the natural disaster took lives of hundreds of people. President declares national mourning as death toll rises after an earthquake.

The Mexican authorities fear that the death toll from the 7.1 scale quake may yet rise as volunteers and professional teams comb through the rubble. The natural disaster in minutes flattened at least 40 buildings in Mexico City, and the focus in the coming hours will shift towards those unable to return to their damaged homes, the executive director of Oxfam in Mexico told.

The poorest districts of Mexico like Xochimilco need help as soon as possible, Sergio Aguyo, a political analyst, wrote on Twitter:

“Xochimilco needs help, provisions and volunteers. There are important damages and no support has arrived.”

Mexico mourns because in one-day hundreds of people lost their relatives, now, thousands of volunteers and emergency personnel have spent the night scrabbling through the debris in a frantic search for survivors. Rescuers were alerted to survivors at one collapsed building by using a mop to make a noise and also a fibre optic cable, everyone is trying to help.

Mexico City Mayor Miguel Ángel Mancera has reported that 52 people have been pulled alive from the rubble of collapsed buildings. He said the death toll in Mexico City was 93, slightly lower than the figure the federal government announced earlier.

He also said at least 38 buildings have been reduced to rubble, at least 20 kids died when this three-story school collapsed in Mexico City. Up to 30 more kids were still missing, that is the black day in the history Mexico, and President declares national mourning after earthquake.
