New NRA president: Oliver North, Reagan aide implicated in Iran-Contra

The National Rifle Association (NRA) has chosen Oliver North its president. Surprisingly, but such a person like Mr North became the most logical choice. Every American in the 1980s knew a name of the marine officer who was a central figure in Iran-Contra arms scandal under Reagan.

Mr North, the disgraced marine officer, to become NRA next president, the life is unpredictable. The Association named Oliver North after its weekend annual meeting in Dallas, where POTUS vowed not to tighten US firearm laws despite suggesting earlier this year he would take on the NRA in the wake of a mass shooting at a Florida school.

The NRA indicated it was looking for a prominent person “in these extraordinary times”, so Mr North is just a perfect choice as its leader. According to NRA chief executive,

“Oliver North is a legendary warrior for American freedom, a gifted communicator and skilled leader,”

Wayne LaPierre said in a statement.

North’s appointment has been ripped by gun-control advocates who called his appointment symptomatic of an NRA tone-deaf given his role in the arms-trafficking scandal that engulfed the White House in the Reagan administration. North has been a Fox News pundit as well as running unsuccessfully as a political candidate since leaving the US military.

The NRA said its current president, Pete Brownell, planned not to seek a second term. Mr Brownell serves as CEO of Brownells Inc, a maker of firearm parts, accessories and ammunition.
