WHO says deaths from COVID-19 have dropped by 80%

Morbidity and mortality rates from coronavirus have decreased significantly since the beginning of the year, but it is too early to cancel the pandemic. This opinion was expressed on Wednesday by the Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus at a press conference in Geneva.

“Statistics on the incidence of COVID-19 in the world is declining, the weekly mortality rate has fallen by 80% since February, but there is no guarantee that this trend will continue in the future. The pandemic is still not over, it is developing,” he said. The policy of states to combat the spread of coronavirus “must adapt to changes” in the infection, the head of WHO added.

On August 31, Ghebreyesus said that with the onset of cold weather in the Northern Hemisphere in the coming months, an increase in the number of hospitalizations and deaths from COVID-19 can be expected.
