Poland has found a way to get around the European Union’s ban on paying extra to grain producers, Polish Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Robert Telus said.

Earlier, he said that before the new harvest, about four thousand tons of wheat should be taken out of Poland, but farmers are in no hurry to sell their grain due to low prices, which are the result of the massive import of grain from Ukraine.

To encourage the sale of grain, the Polish government promised to pay farmers 1,400 złoty (about $333) extra for every ton sold.

“The additional payment will be up to a hectare, since the EU mechanisms do not allow paying up to a ton,” Telius said.

He explained that the surcharge for grain sellers will be “PLN 2,200, which is approximately PLN 1,400 per ton.”

Poland and Hungary, amid protests from local farmers, announced at the end of last week that they were suspending imports of Ukrainian agricultural products that enter the European market without duties. On Monday, Slovakia announced the suspension of the import of grain and other individual products from Ukraine, and on the eve it became known that Bulgaria is also considering the possibility of introducing a temporary ban on the import of Ukrainian grain.
