The campaign for early presidential elections in Uzbekistan starts on May 10.

The election campaign for early presidential elections in Uzbekistan will start on May 10, Zainiddin Nizamkhojaev, chairman of the country’s Central Election Commission, said on Wednesday.

On May 8, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev signed a decree on holding early elections for the head of state. This will be the first presidential election since the constitution was amended to extend the presidential term from five to seven years. Under constitutional law, the incumbent President Mirziyoyev, who is in office for a second term, can run again for this post.

“The election campaign for early presidential elections in the Republic of Uzbekistan begins on May 10 this year,” Nizamkhojaev said at a CEC meeting, which is broadcast online.

On April 30, the citizens of Uzbekistan voted on the draft law on the constitution in a new edition.

According to the CEC, the turnout for the plebiscite was 84.54% of the total number of voters, or more than 16.6 million people. Of these, 90.21%, or more than 15 million citizens, voted for the updated constitution.
