Brussels will support Yerevan in its desire to become an EU member, the EC said

The European Union will support Armenia in its desire to become a member of the EU, European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos said, commenting on the latest statements on the republic’s membership in the EU and the EAEU.

“The meeting of the European political community, as well as the EU-Armenia summit, showed which way they (Armenia) want to go, and Europe will support them,” she said in Brussels.

At a press conference last Saturday, Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed discussing Armenia’s plans for the EU at the next summit of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has repeatedly stated that the country wants to become a member of the European Union, but for this it is necessary to meet its standards. At the same time, Putin noted during talks with Pashinyan on April 1 that staying in the customs union with the European Union and the EAEU is impossible by definition, this is an economic issue.

The Russian President stated that it would be right for Yerevan to hold a referendum on the development of cooperation with the European Union in relation to the citizens of Armenia and Russia, as the republic’s main economic partner. In this case, Russia could draw the appropriate conclusions and follow the path of a “gentle, intelligent and mutually beneficial divorce.”
