US authorities are imposing visa restrictions on cybercriminals as part of the fight against fraud and extortion using digital technologies, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Thursday.
⠀
“Today, I am announcing the introduction of a new global visa restriction policy in accordance with section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act. This policy is directed against those responsible for or involved in cybercrimes and crimes committed using information technology, including those involved in cyber fraud and sexual extortion,” the head of the State Department said in a statement.
⠀
Visa restrictions can also be applied to the next of kin of persons involved in illegal activities of this kind, Rubio added.

According to the Secretary of State, in 2024 alone, cybercriminals stole at least $10 billion from US citizens.
