Thousands of boots washed up on beaches in northern Denmark after Storm Pia caused a ship from Danish shipping company A.P. Moller-Maersk (Maersk) lost 46 containers of goods, local TV channel DR reported on Sunday.

According to the TV channel, the Mayview, en route from the German city of Bremerhaven to the Polish city of Gdansk, lost 46 containers with goods in the North Sea on December 22 due to storm Pia raging in Europe.

“It’s crazy. There are thousands of shoes lying around,” the channel quoted coastal inspector Tosmas Duurloo as saying.

As the TV channel notes, in addition to shoes, which made up most of the goods that ended up on the shore, medical equipment and small wheels for wheelbarrows were also found on the beaches.

Storm Pia hit the Netherlands on Thursday, causing high water levels in the country and the closure of all storm barriers for the second time in history. The Norwegian cruise ship Maud experienced handling problems in the North Sea on Thursday due to damage sustained during Storm Pia. Storm Pia put storm warnings in place across many parts of the UK on Thursday, with British Airways (BA) canceling more than 20 flights over the Christmas period.
