Emmanuel Macron, Xi Jinping to agree ‘irreversibility’ of Paris climate agreement

The French President Emmanuel Macron and his Chinese counterpart met in Shanghai where they had the opportunity to discuss the climate issue among others. Both national leaders are ready to sign a document that mentions the “irreversibility” of the 2015 Paris climate agreement, AFP reported on Tuesday.

Emmanuel Macron and Xi Jinping are set to sign another climatic agreement on Tuesday, despite the US preferred to withdraw from the Paris accord. While France feels “regret” over the action from the US, the Franco-Chinese partnership on the climate and biodiversity should move on to keep Earth for the generations to come.

“The text that will be signed tomorrow includes a paragraph on the irreversibility of the Paris agreement,” an official from the French presidential office said.

President Macron, who is currently in Shanghai as part of his state visit to China, will meet with his Chinese counterpart on Wednesday. The French leader spoke at a trade fair in the city on Tuesday shortly after a keynote speech from President Xi. In his speech, Mr Macron noted that the cooperation between the EU and China was “decisive” and urged for commitments to be “enhanced”.

Emmanuel Macron urged signatories to be in compliance with the Paris agreement. Thus, all countries will need next year to enhance their commitments to reduce emissions, and to confirm new commitments for 2030 and 2050.

“Next year, we need, in the agenda of enhancement, to be collectively up to the task,” Macron added.
