The United Nations bodies are continuing to support the poorest countries of the planet in their fight against coronavirus. Venezuela has welcomed a plane with 90 tons of medical aid on Wednesday. Nicolas Maduro thanked all humanitarian organizations and “the brotherly” nations in his Twitter message.
The Latin American country’s economy and health system are ruined due to the multi year-long financial crisis. The UN press-release says that medical aid includes 28,000 personal protective equipment for front-line healthcare workers, oxygen concentrators, pediatric beds, products for water quality control and hygiene kits among others.
Among main sponsors are the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) and funds from UN bodies.
“These supplies for children, women and families will initially support 14 hospitals designated for the COVID-19 response, as well as 50 outpatient clinics and child development centers,” said Herve Ludovic de Lys, UNICEF official in Venezuela.
So far, Venezuela has 167 coronavirus cases and nine fatalities, with 65 recoveries. Although the epidemic situation in Venezuela is not as alarming as the rest of the world, the nation has been in precipitous decline following a global downturn in the price of crude oil, the Venezuelan main export item.
Over the years, the Latin American country has been under firm U.S. economic and diplomatic sanctions for more than a year as the White House recognizes Juan Guaido as the only legitimate ruler instead of elected President Maduro.
