Angela Merkel is officially out as Germany’s chancellor

Angela Merkel officially has ended her 16-yer-long political era on Wednesday. German Chancellor became known as the world’s most powerful woman and the de facto leader of Europe, DW reports.

In fact, Ms Merkel has stepped down as leader of her Christian Democratic Union in 2018 after 18 years as its boss, but stayed in her role as Germany’s chancellor until her term ended in 2021.

Now, the top German official is Olaf Scholz who has been sworn in as the new chancellor of Germany, replacing Angela Merkel. That amazing woman has been led the European country for 16 years.

On Wednesday, Scholz was sworn in as chancellor by the president of Germany’s parliament, Bundestag. Earlier in the day Scholz was voted in by the parliament and received his official certificate of office from the German president.

Scholz, a Social Democrat, was agreed to be Merkel’s successor after three parties’ agreement. Last month, the Social Democratic Party (SDU), the Green Party, and the Free Democratic Party have reached a consensus on forming a coalition government. Their preliminary negotiations have taken two months, in fact.

Scholz previously served as Germany’s finance minister and vice chancellor, and was the deputy leader of the SDU, one of the most powerful rival of Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union.
