Uber in Madrid launched first electric car fleet

Unber made Madrid greener and more comfortable, this week the ride-hailing service launched its first fleet of electric cars. The mayor Manuela Carmena believes that environment-friendly taxi will help improve capital’s image.

On Thursday, Uber lanched its new environment-friendly project: the capital of Spain got the first electric car fleet, taxi from Uber becomes green. According to Carles Lloret, managing director of Uber for southern Europe, Uber’s service of matching private car owners with passengers has prompted anger among the heavily-regulated taxi sector.

The ride-hailing company from San Francisco hopes the introduction of cleaner cars will help improve Madrid’s image and will help to promote the touristic services as well. The mayor Manuela Carmena said she is glad to have electric car fleet in the capital.

Uber’s initiative responded to the new measures at combating pollution, which were unveiled by the Madrid’s city administration in November. It required the limiting private traffic in the center to tightening speed limits on access roads as well.

“We want to do things that are in line with what the town hall wants,”

Lloret said.

Uber operates in Madrid with restrictive licenses which it says impedes expansion. It hopes the launch of the environmentally service may encourage a liberalization of the car-sharing sector.

“We would love to see more licenses awarded in the future, perhaps for greener cars so there could be more in circulation,”

added Lloret.
