Airbnb booms in Switzerland with almost 1 million yearly guests

Switzerland used every opportunity to welcome guests, so, the app Airbnb’s success in this country is pretty predictable: nearly 900,000 people have rented accommodation in different Swiss cities through Airbnb.

The Airbnb’s Travel Report Switzerland 2018 confirmed an increasing number of guests in the country- of 300% over the last three years. The figures are more than good,  the demand for bookings in popular mountain destinations was 50% higher than that in cities.

According to the data, guests prefer staying away from the hustle and bustle of Switzerland’s famous cities Zurich, Geneva, Basel, Bern and Lausanne, while 69% of guests staying in quiet rural areas and mountains. One of the favourites is Spiez, the wonderful village with the lake. Grindelwald and Ringgenberg are also popular among tourists.

An interesting fact is Swiss citizens accounting for 22% of all stays (197,100), they are the majority of Airbnb guests come from within Switzerland. The second place belongs to the American tourists (135,700). France, Germany, the UK comes after, while Swiss Airbnb venues welcomed guests from 80 different countries in 2018.

The average Airbnb user looks like this

The average age of guests was 38 years. 52% of guests were male and 48% were female. The average duration of stay was 3.4 nights. The average age of hosts in Switzerland is 44, with 55% of all hosts being female. There are approximately 35,800 Airbnb venues in Switzerland.

In 2018, 1.6 million Swiss users have booked stays on Airbnb outside of Switzerland. It is pretty logical that 43% of guests prefer to book their stays outside the main tourist seasons.

The online platform Airbnb allows people to rent out properties or spare rooms to guests. Its adepts argue that it provides a cost-effective accommodation solution.
