Every fifth U.S. Navy ship will be unmanned by 2031

Almost every fifth ship in the US Navy will become unmanned by fiscal year 2031, it has become known from the Navy’s shipbuilding plans.

According to the document, by 2031, the number of unmanned vessels will reach 83 units, which will amount to 18.4% of the projected total fleet of 450 ships. At the moment, the US Navy has only 39 unmanned units.


Between fiscal years 2027 and 2031, the Pentagon intends to purchase 47 unmanned surface ships worth $3.1 billion. In addition, the agency will allocate another $ 1.13 billion for the purchase of 16 ultra-large unmanned underwater vehicles of the XLUUV class.
