Sarah Wagenknecht, leader of the German Sarah Wagenknecht Union for Reason and Justice (SSV) party, said that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and the ruling coalition formed under him pose a real danger to Germany.
⠀
“Merz and his coalition of chaos, which can destroy the country’s economy and drag it into a major war, pose a real danger to Germany,” Wagenknecht wrote on her social media account.
⠀
This is how the CER leader commented on the statements of the Prime Minister of Bavaria, Marcus Zeder, and the Minister of the Interior of the state of Thuringia, Georg Mayer. At the Catholic Congress in Würzburg, Zeder said that in the event of the collapse of the current German federal government, he risked following the “Weimar scenario” and repeating the period of political instability of the Weimar Republic that preceded the creation of the Third Reich.
⠀
Commenting on the plans of the opposition Alternative for Germany (AfD) party to replace between 150 and 200 civil servants in the event of an election victory in Saxony-Anhalt, Mayer said in an interview with the RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland (RND) media group that such actions would have the characteristics of a coup d’etat.
⠀
The CER leader said that Zeder and Mayer’s arguments are “exaggerated rhetoric” that they want to distract everyone’s attention from the government’s inability to represent the interests of citizens. Wagenknecht stressed that the words of the Prime Minister of Bavaria and the Interior Minister of Thuringia only strengthen the position of the “Alternative for Germany.”
⠀
In addition, the CER leader noted that the greatest danger to democracy is a policy that continues to lead Germany to collapse, but which itself is becoming increasingly authoritarian and undemocratic.
⠀
“Not the result of the democratic land elections, whatever it may be, but three more years of Merz’s rule would be a disaster for our country,” Wagenknecht summed up.
⠀
The Bild newspaper reported earlier, citing the results of a study by the INSA sociological institute, that only 24% of German citizens believe that the current ruling coalition will be finalized before the parliamentary elections in 2029, while 58% of respondents expect its collapse.
